Leather Duffle Bags

Carry-On Leather Duffle Bag Size Rules 2026 | RusticTown

Your duffle is 20 inches. The bin allows 22. So why do gate agents still pull bags aside? Because depth, fare type and a packed bulge decide more than length. This guide lays out the 2026 carry-on and personal item limits for eight US airlines, then measures every RusticTown leather duffle against them, bag by bag, inch by inch. You will see which six bags sit exactly at the 9-inch limit, which ones need soft packing, how 7 kg international weight caps change the maths, and what to carry on a United Basic Economy ticket. Read it before you book, not at the gate.

A carry-on leather duffle bag must fit 22 x 14 x 9 inches on American, Delta, United, Alaska and JetBlue, and 24 x 16 x 10 inches on Southwest. A 20-inch duffle packed to 9 inches deep fits all six. United Basic Economy allows only a personal item, so bring a 16-inch bag instead.

This guide is for anyone flying in the US who wants one leather bag in the overhead bin and nothing at the carousel. It covers the current airline limits, measures every duffle in the RusticTown range against them, and tells you which bag to pick for your fare, your airline and your trip length.

What size can a carry-on duffle bag be in 2026?

Five of the six largest US airlines use the same carry-on limit: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm), handles and wheels included. Southwest is the outlier at 24 x 16 x 10 inches. The personal item, the smaller bag that goes under the seat in front of you, varies far more from airline to airline.

Airline Carry-on limit (in) Personal item limit (in) Basic or lowest fare includes a carry-on?
American 22 x 14 x 9 18 x 14 x 8 Yes
Delta 22 x 14 x 9 No published size, must fit under the seat Yes
United 22 x 14 x 9 17 x 10 x 9 No, personal item only on domestic Basic Economy
Southwest 24 x 16 x 10 16.25 x 13.5 x 8 Yes
Alaska 22 x 14 x 9 No published size, must fit under the seat Yes
JetBlue 22 x 14 x 9 17 x 13 x 8 Yes
Spirit 22 x 18 x 10 18 x 14 x 8 No, carry-on is a paid add-on
Frontier 24 x 16 x 10 18 x 14 x 8 No, carry-on is a paid add-on

Three points matter more than the numbers themselves:

  • None of the big US carriers publishes a carry-on weight limit. The rule is that you must be able to lift the bag into the bin yourself. Weight becomes a real constraint on many international airlines, which we cover below.
  • Fare type decides more than bag size. A perfectly sized duffle still costs money at the gate on a United Basic Economy ticket, or on any Spirit or Frontier base fare.
  • Rules change. JetBlue reversed its Blue Basic carry-on ban in 2024. Check your airline's baggage page in the week you fly, and check your fare's inclusions before you pack.

Which RusticTown leather duffles fit the 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit?

We measured every duffle in the range against the two limits that cover nearly all US domestic flights. Dimensions and prices below come from each product page in October 2026. Weights are listed where the product page states one.

Duffle Price Dimensions (in) Listed weight Fits 22 x 14 x 9 Fits Southwest 24 x 16 x 10

Full-Grain Travel Weekender $199.45 20 x 16 x 10 Not listed 2 in over on height Yes
Roadstar Overnight Weekender $179.45 24 x 11.5 x 9 5.5 lb 2 in over on length Yes

The pattern is simple. The 20 x 11.5 x 9 inch body is the sweet spot: it sits exactly at the 9-inch depth limit with 2 inches of length and 2.5 inches of height in reserve. Six bags in the range share it, from the $119.45 Nando to the $179.45 Archer.

The bags marked "1 in over" are soft-sided. A leather duffle has no frame, so its listed depth is its depth when stuffed full. Pack one of these to about 80 percent and it squeezes into a 9-inch sizer. Pack it to bursting and an agent can ask you to check it.

Bags 24 inches long, like the Roadstar, are built for Southwest, Frontier, or the hold. On a 22-inch airline they are a checked bag, and that is fine if you plan for it.

Leather Duffle Bags

Is a leather duffle bag a carry-on or a personal item?

A 20-inch duffle is a carry-on. It is too large to count as a personal item on any US airline, because personal item limits top out at 18 inches long and 8 or 9 inches deep.

The one RusticTown duffle that can pass as a personal item is the 16 x 12 x 8 inch Hudson. It fits the personal item limits at American, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit and Frontier. It does not fit United's 17 x 10 x 9 personal item box, because 12 inches is 2 inches taller than United allows. On Delta and Alaska, which publish no personal item size, a 16-inch bag that slides under the seat is normally accepted, but the gate agent makes the call.

The practical setup for most travellers is one 20-inch duffle in the bin plus a slim backpack, briefcase or tote under the seat. That pairing is allowed on every main-cabin fare at all six major airlines.

How do you measure a soft leather duffle for an airline sizer?

Measure the bag packed, not empty. An empty duffle is flat and tells you nothing. Here is the method that matches how a gate sizer works:

  1. Pack the bag the way you will travel, including shoes, toiletries and a jacket if it rides inside.
  2. Measure length from the outer edge of one end panel to the other. Include any end pockets and studs.
  3. Measure height from the base, including the metal feet, to the top of the handles at rest. Airlines count handles, feet and pockets.
  4. Measure depth at the widest point, which is usually the middle of the bag where clothes bulge.
  5. Compare against your airline's numbers, in any orientation. A sizer does not care which way the bag goes in.

If depth reads 10 inches on a 9-inch airline, remove one bulky layer, wear your heaviest shoes and jacket on the plane, or press the bag down from above. Full-grain leather softens with use, so a duffle that is a tight fit on its first trip usually slides in more easily by its tenth.

Does a leather duffle's weight matter on US and international flights?

On US domestic flights, no. American, Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska and JetBlue publish no carry-on weight cap. Allegiant is the main US exception at 40 lb.

International flights are different. Many long-haul carriers cap cabin bags at 7 to 8 kg, about 15.4 to 17.6 lb, as of September 2026:

Airline Economy cabin bag weight limit
Emirates 7 kg (15.4 lb)
Qantas (international) 7 kg (15.4 lb)
Qatar Airways 7 kg (15.4 lb)
Singapore Airlines 7 kg (15.4 lb)
Lufthansa 8 kg (17.6 lb)
Virgin Atlantic 10 kg (22 lb)

Full-grain leather is heavier than nylon. The Nando weighs 3.7 lb empty and the Sasha 5.5 lb. On a 7 kg airline, that leaves about 11.7 lb of packing room in the Nando and about 9.9 lb in the Sasha. That is enough for a 3-day trip of clothes and toiletries, but not for a laptop, camera and boots on top.

Two habits keep you under: put the laptop and chargers in your personal item, which most of these airlines do not weigh, and wear your heaviest layer on board.

A note on depth outside the US: Emirates lists a 21.7 x 15 x 8.7 inch cabin limit, which is 0.3 inches shallower than a 9-inch duffle. A soft bag packed below full handles that easily. A hard case of the same size would not.

How much can a 20-inch leather duffle hold?

A 20 x 11.5 x 9 inch duffle has an outer box volume of about 34 litres. Real packing space is lower, because a duffle tapers at the ends and the leather has thickness. Plan on usable space of roughly 28 to 30 litres.

That is a true 2 to 3 night bag. For context, the largest bag that fits a 22 x 14 x 9 inch sizer is about 45 litres, so a 20-inch duffle trades about 11 litres of space for 2 inches of clearance and a far easier time at the gate.

A tested 3-night load for a 20-inch duffle:

  • 3 shirts and 1 sweater, rolled
  • 2 pairs of trousers or 1 trousers plus 1 shorts
  • 4 sets of underwear and socks
  • 1 pair of shoes, soles in a shoe bag along one end
  • A dopp kit with liquids in a quart bag
  • A charger pouch in the inner zip pocket

If you need a fourth day, step up to the 24-inch Roadstar and fly an airline that takes it in the cabin, or check it.

Can you bring a leather duffle on a basic economy ticket?

On American, Delta, Alaska and JetBlue, yes. Their lowest fares include one full-size carry-on plus a personal item, so a 20-inch duffle goes in the bin like any other bag. You board last, so the bins may be full. If the agent asks to gate-check it, the bag still flies free and is returned on the jet bridge.

On United domestic Basic Economy, no. You get a personal item only. Bringing a full-size carry-on to the gate triggers a bag fee plus a gate handling charge. If you fly United Basic, carry the 16-inch Hudson as your one bag and keep it under 12 inches tall, or pay for the carry-on when you book, which is cheaper than paying at the gate.

On Spirit and Frontier, every carry-on is a paid add-on regardless of size. Buy it online at booking.

Leather vs nylon carry-on duffle: which is better?

Nylon wins on weight. Leather wins on how long the bag lasts and how it looks after years of use. The choice depends on how often you fly and how much you care about repair.

Factor Full-grain leather duffle Nylon duffle
Empty weight, 20 in 3.7 to 5.5 lb in the RusticTown range Often 1.5 to 2.5 lb
Water Resists light rain, needs conditioning Shrugs off rain
Wear Scuffs blend into patina Abrasion shows as fuzzing and holes
Repair Stitching and straps can be redone by a leather repairer Usually replaced, not repaired
Look over time Darkens and softens Fades
Price $89.95 to $249.45 at RusticTown Wide range, often lower

The cost-per-trip maths favours leather for frequent travellers. If a $119.45 Nando lasts 10 years at 12 trips a year, it costs about $1 per trip. A $50 nylon bag replaced every 3 years costs about $167 over the same decade, or about $1.39 per trip, and you end up with four bags in landfill instead of one.

Who should buy a carry-on leather duffle, and who should skip it?

Buy one if you take short trips of 1 to 3 nights, travel mostly on US airlines with no carry-on weight limit, want one bag that also works as a gym or weekend bag, and like gear that ages rather than wears out.

Skip it if you fly mostly on 7 kg international carriers with a laptop and camera, need wheels because of a back or shoulder problem, travel more than 4 nights without laundry, or fly United Basic Economy every time. In those cases a lighter wheeled case or a personal-item-sized bag will serve you better, and we would rather you buy the right bag than the wrong one from us.

How do you pack a leather duffle so it passes the gate?

Most gate-check stories come from packing, not from the bag's size. Five habits fix them:

  1. Pack flat, then fill the ends. Lay clothes along the base, then use the tapered ends for shoes and the dopp kit. This keeps the middle, where depth is measured, from bulging.
  2. Keep shoes in the shoe pocket or a bag. It protects the lining and stops the bag going lopsided.
  3. Leave the top 1 inch empty. A zip under strain is the first thing an agent notices.
  4. Wear the bulk. Jacket, boots and sweater go on your body for the flight.
  5. Use the shoulder strap at the gate. A bag carried on the shoulder looks smaller and draws fewer questions than one carried by the handles at full stretch.

Which carry-on leather duffle should you choose?

Match the bag to how you fly:

  • Best value carry-on: The Nando Adventure leather travel duffle at $119.45. Full-grain buffalo leather, 20 x 11.5 x 9 inches, the lightest listed weight of any 20-inch bag in the range at 3.7 lb, and 27 reviews. This is the one we point first-time buyers to.
  • Most proven 20-inch bag: The Sasha travel duffle in full-grain buffalo at $149.45. Same footprint as the Nando, with a thick cloth lining and a sturdier 5.5 lb build. Rated by 18 buyers.
  • Most distinctive look: The Navigator hair-on cowhide weekender at $179.45. Same carry-on size, with a hair-on cowhide panel. Rated 4.83 out of 5 by 6 buyers.
  • United Basic Economy or a true personal item: The 16 x 12 x 8 inch Hudson at $89.95. Not for United's personal item box, but fine as a personal item on American, JetBlue and Southwest.
  • Shoes kept separate: The John at $149.99 has a dedicated shoe compartment. Pack it soft, because it is 11 inches deep when full.
  • Southwest flyers and 4-night trips: The 24-inch Roadstar at $179.45. It fits Southwest's 24 x 16 x 10 inch limit exactly.

Who makes RusticTown duffles?

Every RusticTown duffle is handmade by leather artisans in Rajasthan, India, working directly with the brand. The carry-on range uses full-grain buffalo or cowhide leather, YKK zippers and brass fittings, with metal feet on the base to keep the leather off airport floors. Each bag carries a 1-year warranty. Full-grain leather keeps its outer surface intact, which is why it darkens and softens into a patina instead of peeling or cracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a leather duffle bag allowed as a carry-on?

Yes. A leather duffle is allowed as a carry-on if it fits the airline's size limit, which is 22 x 14 x 9 inches on most major US airlines and 24 x 16 x 10 inches on Southwest. Material does not matter. Size and your fare type decide whether it goes in the overhead bin.

What size duffle bag is carry-on size?

A duffle up to 22 inches long, 14 inches tall and 9 inches deep is carry-on size on American, Delta, United, Alaska and JetBlue. A 20-inch duffle is the safest choice because it leaves 2 inches of length to spare. Measure depth when the bag is fully packed.

Can a duffle bag be a personal item?

Only a small one. Personal item limits run from 16.25 x 13.5 x 8 inches on Southwest to 18 x 14 x 8 inches on American, so most 20-inch duffles are too long. A 16-inch duffle, like the Hudson at 16 x 12 x 8 inches, fits as a personal item on American, JetBlue and Southwest.

Do airlines measure soft duffle bags?

Gate agents measure any bag that looks oversized, soft or hard. A soft leather duffle can be compressed into a sizer, which is its advantage over a hard case. If your packed duffle is 1 inch over on depth, take out one bulky item and it will usually fit.

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags in the US?

American, Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska and JetBlue publish no carry-on weight limit. You must be able to lift the bag into the overhead bin yourself. Allegiant is the main exception at 40 lb. Many international airlines cap cabin bags at 7 to 8 kg.

Can I bring a carry-on duffle on United Basic Economy?

No. On United domestic Basic Economy you may bring one personal item that fits 17 x 10 x 9 inches under the seat. A full-size duffle brought to the gate is charged a bag fee plus a gate handling charge. Buy the carry-on at booking or choose a higher fare.

How many days can you pack in a 20-inch leather duffle?

A 20-inch leather duffle holds 2 to 3 nights of clothing comfortably. A 20 x 11.5 x 9 inch bag has about 34 litres of outer volume and roughly 28 to 30 litres of usable space. For 4 or more nights, use a 24-inch weekender and check it if your airline requires.

Is a leather duffle too heavy for carry-on travel?

Not on US airlines, which have no carry-on weight limit. A 20-inch full-grain duffle weighs 3.7 to 5.5 lb empty, about 2 to 3 lb more than nylon. On 7 kg international carriers, keep the laptop in your personal item to stay under the limit.
